Locations

Natural passes that connect the inland foothills of Velebit with the coast transversely divide Velebit ridge. The major roads and paths through these passes are: Vratnik (698 m), Oltari (950 m), Alan (1412 m), Stara vrata (927 m) near Baških Oštarija, Mali Alan (1045 m) and Prezid (778 m).

The largest of the passes is the Oštarije Pass, splitting the Velebit ridge roughly into half, which is why Velebit used to be divided into Northern and Southern Velebit.

Today, the existing roads divide Velebit into five sections: -Senjsko bilo (from Vratnik to Oltar) - Northern Velebit (from Oltar to Alan) - Central Velebit (from Veliki Alan to Baške Oštarije) - Southern Velebit (from Oštarije Pass to Mali Halan) - Southeastern Velebit (from Mali Alan, via Prezid to Zrmanja).
